The 1990 German federal election were held on Sunday, December 2, 1990, to elect members of the German Bundestag.

It was the first election to take place in the newly reunified Germany and the first democratic all-German election since November 1932.[1]

Results

The CDU/CSU alliance led by Chancellor Helmut Kohl came first in a landslide victory with 43.8% of the vote and 319 seats in the Bundestag.[2]

The SPD suffered its worst result since 1957, winning 33.5% of the vote and 239 seats. The FDP also did well winning 11.0% of the vote and 79 seats.[3][4]

The newly formed Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) which was the successor to the East German Socialist Unity Party (SED) won 17 seats despite only winning 2.4% nationwide.

This was due to the election being organised into two separate areas: the former West Germany and West Berlin; and the former East Germany and East Berlin. This also affected the Greens who won only 1.2% of the vote nationwide but won 8 seats.[5]

Aftermath

The CDU/CSU and the FDP formed their fourth coalition government with Kohl remaining as Chancellor.
