Location of Abbey of Fontenay in France

The Abbey of Fontenay is a former Cistercian abbey. It is in the commune of Marmagne near Montbard, in the département of Côte-d'Or in France. It was founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in 1118. It was built in the Romanesque style. It is one of the oldest and Cistercian abbeys in Europe. The abbey became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.[1] The dormitory, cloister, chapter house, caldarium, refectory, dovecote and "forge" of the church are all maintained from the original church. The abbey, along with other Cistercian abbeys, combine Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

This World Heritage Site has maintained most of the Romanesque and Early Gothic buildings. It shows how the Abbey looked in the 12th century very well.
