Adam Henrique (born February 6, 1990) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre. He currently plays for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks.
Career
Before playing in the NHL, Henrique played four seasons with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). They selected him with the 24th overall pick in the 2006 OHL Priority Selection Draft.[1] Henrique had a successful tenure with the Spitfires, helping them win back-to-back Memorial Cups in 2009 and 2010.[2]
He was drafted 82nd overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2008 NHL entry draft. He spent time playing between the Devils and their AHL-affiliate Albany Devils.
On April 11, 2011, Henrique made his NHL debut in a 3-2 win against the Boston Bruins.[3] He was sent back down to Albany afterwards. In October, New Jersey called him back up and he played two games before being sent back down. After Jacob Josefson suffered an injury, the Devils called Henrique back up and he stayed with team.[4] On October 27, he recorded his first NHL point, assisting on a Nick Palmieri goal in a 5–3 loss against the Phoenix Coyotes.[5] On November 3, Henrique scored his first NHL goal against Sergei Bobrovsky in a 4-3 shootout win against the Philadelphia Flyers.[6]
During Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, Henrique scored two goals against the Florida Panthers, including the double-overtime winner to send the Devils to the Conference Semifinals. He was only the second rookie player to score an overtime-winning goal in a Game 7.[7] Henrique also became the first rookie to score two series-clinching overtime goals in the same playoffs. This came after he scored the overtime goal to eliminate the New York Rangers and send the Devils to the to the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals.[8] He was named to the 2012 All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy.[9]
On August 26, 2013, Henrique signed a six-year, $24 million contract to return to the Devils.[10] He ended the season as the Devils leading scorer but suffered many injuries during the course of the season.[11]
On November 30, 2017, the Devils traded Henrique along with Joseph Blandisi and a third-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Sami Vatanen and a conditional draft pick.[12] On December 1, Henrique made his debut with the Ducks in a 4-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.[13] The next night, he scored his first goal in a Ducks uniform in a 3–2 shootout loss to the Nashville Predators.[14] On July 16, 2018, Henrique signed a five-year, $29.125 million contract extension to stay with the Ducks.[15] On December 17, 2023, he recorded his first career hat trick in a 5–1 win over the New Jersey Devils.[16]
On March 6, 2024, the Ducks traded Henrique along with Sam Carrick in exchange for a 2024 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2025 fifth-round pick.[17] On July 1, 2024, Henrique signed a two-year, $6 million contract to return to the Oilers.[18]
