Alan and Marilyn Bergman

Alan Bergman (September 11, 1925 – July 17, 2025) and Marilyn Bergman (née Keith; November 10, 1928 – January 8, 2022) were American lyricists and songwriters. They were married in 1958.[1]

They were both born in Brooklyn, New York City. Alan studied at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill while Marilyn studied at New York University.

The Bergmans wrote the music and lyrics for many well known television shows, movies, and stage musicals. The Bergmans won two Academy Awards for Best Original Song and have been added into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They also won four Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award in 1975.

They wrote songs for In the Heat of the Night, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Tootsie, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Happy Ending, and The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart.

Marilyn Bergman died on January 8, 2022 at her home in Los Angeles from respiratory failure, at age 93.[2] Alan Bergman died at his home in Los Angeles, on July 17, 2025, at the age of 99.[3]
