Career
Before playing in the NHL, Stewart played four seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs of Ontario Hockey League (OHL). During his time with the Frontenacs, Stewart served as their captain.
He was selected 25th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2003 NHL entry draft. He was then sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate San Antonio Rampage and then the Rochester Americans. On October 18, 2005, the Panthers called Stewart up and he made his NHL debut in a 4–3 loss against the New Jersey Devils. Stewart recorded his first NHL point during the game, assisting on a Serge Payer goal.[1] Two days later, on October 20, Stewart scored his first NHL goal against Olaf Kölzig in a 3–2 win against the Washington Capitals.[2] Stewart's season came to an end early after he injured his wrist from a hit into the boards by Mike Commodore.[3]
On July 13, 2009, Stewart decided to sign a one-year contract to play with then Atlanta Thrashers.[4] He had a successful time on the Panthers. In the 2010–11 season, Stewart set career highs in games played, goals, assists, and other statistics. On October 15, 2010, Stewart scored his first NHL hat-trick in a 5–4 shootout win against the Anaheim Ducks.[5]
On July 2, 2011, Stewart decided to sign a two-year, US$1.8 million contract to play with then Carolina Hurricanes.[6] He played 77 games with them, scoring 9 goals and recording 11 assists.
On January 13, 2013, the Hurricanes traded Stewart along with a 2013 fourth-round pick and a 2014 sixth-round pick to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Kevin Westgarth.[7] He never played for the team and was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Manchester Monarchs.[8]
After playing for a couple of teams in Europe, Stewart decided to retire from playing professional ice hockey in 2016.
Broadcasting career
In 2019, Stewart joined Sportsnet as a studio analyst.
