Anton Strålman (born 1 August 1986) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played a parts of 16 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Arizona Coyotes, and Boston Bruins. He also played for Timrå IK and HV71 of the Elitserien/Swedish Hockey League.
Career
Before playing in the NHL, Strålman played two seasons with Timrå IK of the Elitserien (SEL). He had a successful career with the team, being named as one of the finalists for the 2006 Elitserien Rookie of the Year.[1]
He was selected 216th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2005 NHL entry draft. On 16 May 2007, Strålman signed a three-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.[2] He was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Toronto Marlies. On 23 October, the Maple Leafs called him up and he made his NHL debut in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Atlanta Thrashers.[3] On 10 January 2008, he recorded his first NHL point, assisting on a Nik Antropov powerplay goal in a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.[4] On 21 March, Strålman scored his first NHL goal against Ryan Miller in a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.[5]
On 27 July, the Maple Leafs traded Strålman along with Colin Stuart and a 2012 seventh-round draft pick to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Wayne Primeau and a 2011 second-round pick.[6] He never played a game for them. On 28 September, the Flames traded him to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a 2010 third-round pick.[7] He played two seasons with them.
On 3 November 2011, Strålman signed a one-year contract to join the New York Rangers.[8] On 26 July 2012, he signed a two-year, $3.4 million contract with the Rangers as an unrestricted free agent.[9] During his time with New York, he helped them reach the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals but the team lost to the Los Angeles Kings four games to one.[10]
On 1 July 2014, Strålman signed a five-year, $22 million contract to join the Tampa Bay Lightning.[11] He set career highs in points and helped the Lightning reach the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals where they were defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks four games to two.[12]
On July 1, 2019, Strålman signed a three-year, $16.5 million contract to join the Florida Panthers.[13] He played two seasons with them.
On 26 July 2021, the Panthers traded Strålman along with Vladislav Kolyachonok and a 2024 second-round pick to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a 2023 7th-round pick.[14] He played one season with them.
On 11 October 2022, Stralman signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Boston Bruins.[15] He only played 8 games with them before being sent down to their AHL-affiliate Providence Bruins.
On 15 July 2023, Strålman left North American and signed a one-year contract with HV71 of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).[16]
Stralman retired from playing professional ice hockey in 2024.
