Augusto Ruschi Biological Reserve (Portuguese: Reserva Biológica Augusto Ruschi) is a protected place in Brazil. Brazil's federal government runs the reserve. The reserve is in the state of Espírito Santo. The park is full of rainforest of the Atlantic Forest biome.

Place

The reserve is 3,562 hectares (8,800 acres) in size. The government made the place a protected reserve on 20 September 1982. The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation runs the park.[1] The reserve is in of the Central Atlantic Forest Ecological Corridor.[2] The International Union for Conservation of Nature says this place is a category Ia (strict nature reserve). It is in the Santa Teresa municipality in Espírito Santo state.[3]

Living things

The reserve is mostly rainforest where the trees grow close together. There are many different plants in the reserve. Some of the plants are rare. The terrain is rugged, with altitudes ranging from 90 to 1,100 metres (300 to 3,610 ft). The streams that start in the reserve go into the Doce, Timbuí, and Piraqueaçú rivers.[3]

There are protected birds in the reserve: red-browed amazon (Amazona rhodocorytha), white-necked hawk (Leucopternis lacernulatus), Atlantic black-breasted woodpecker (Celeus torquatus tinnunculus), rufous-brown solitaire (Cichlopsis leucogenys), purple-winged ground dove (Claravis godefrida), black-bellied thorntail (Discosura langsdorffi), Salvadori's antwren (Myrmotherula minor) and brown-backed parrotlet (Touit melanonotus). There are protected mammals in the park: maned sloth (Bradypus torquatus), Atlantic titi (Callicebus personatus), northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus), buffy-headed marmoset (Callithrix flaviceps), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and cougar (Puma concolor capricornensis). There are other protected animals in the park: black uruçu (Melipona capixaba) and pinthous mimic white (Moschoneura pinthous methymna).[1]
