Badra Gunba

Badra Gunba, born on March 14, 1981, is a politician from Abkhazia. He has been the president of Abkhazia since 2025. Before that, he was the vice president from 2020 to 2025 under President Aslan Bzhania.

Badra Gunba was born in Sukhumi when it was part of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He studied economics at Saratov State Agrarian University. In 2009, he became the Deputy Minister of Culture, and in 2011, he was promoted to Minister of Culture. In 2020, Aslan Bzhania chose Gunba as his running mate for the presidential election, and they both ran as Independents.

Aslan Bzhania won the 2020 presidential election, becoming president, and Badra Gunba became vice president on March 23, 2020. In November 2024, protests against Bzhania led to his resignation on November 19, and Gunba became acting president. In March 2025, Gunba ran for president, won the election, and was sworn in as president on April 2, 2025.

Early life and education

Badra Gunba was born on March 14, 1981, in Sukhumi, part of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He graduated from Sokhumi State University in 1998 and worked as an economics teacher at Abkhazian State University. In 2003, he earned a degree in accounting and auditing from Saratov State Agrarian University.

From December 2003 to August 2004, Badra Gunba worked for the Saratov city government as a specialist in the Department of Social Sphere and Apparatus Financing. He held various roles in the city's financial department from March 2004 to February 2006. In 2007, he earned a PhD from Saratov State Agrarian University.

Abkhazia

From January 2009 to October 2011, Badra Gunba served as the Deputy Minister of Culture in Abkhazia. He then became the Minister of Culture from January 2011 to January 2014. In 2020, he was appointed Vice President of Abkhazia.

In November 2024, President Aslan Bzhania resigned after protesters took over government buildings. Badra Gunba became acting president and later won the 2025 presidential election against Adgur Ardzinba. Russia, which had cut off electricity to Abkhazia following Bzhania’s resignation, reportedly interfered in the election through Sergey Kiriyenko, a top Kremlin official, to support Gunba’s campaign.

On March 3, 2025, Badra Gunba appointed Vladimir Delba as the prime minister of Abkhazia.

Personal life

Gunba has two children with his wife.[1]
