Bassel al-Assad was a Syrian army general and the oldest son of Hafez al-Assad and the older brother of Bashar al-Assad. It was believed that Basil would replace Hafez until he died in the year 1994 in a car crash.[1] He was buried with his father Hafez in their family's native village of Qardaha later that year.[2][3]
