History
The station was started by the Soviet Union on February 22, 1968. It is one of the oldest stations in the region.
The station is named after Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. He was a Russian sailor who explored Antarctica in the early 1800s.
In October 2018, it was the site of the first attempted murder in Antarctica.[1]
Geography
The station is on an island called King George Island. This island is in the South Shetland Islands. It is close to other science stations from different countries.
The station is on a part of the island that is not covered in a lot of ice. This makes it a good place to have a base.
Research
Scientists at the station study the weather and the environment. They also study how people can live in the cold climate of Antarctica.
