Benny Tai (born 12 July 1964) was a University of Hong Kong law teacher and a staunch democracy fighter. From 2013, he called for "true universal suffrage". He somehow became a member of the Umbrella Movement. He went to jail for 6 months because of the "conspiracy to commit public nuisance" and "inciting others to commit public nuisance" charges.[2] [3]
After the Umbrella Movement, he was still politically active and influential for around five years. He continued to do controversial things as a leader. In 2024, a court sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment for subversion.[4] [5][6]
