History

The station was built in a very short time. It was made from over 130 shipping containers put together. It became a working station on March 18, 2012.[1][2]

Bharati Station is one of two active stations that India has in Antarctica. The other is called Maitri.

Geography

The station is in East Antarctica. It is located on a place called Larsemann Hills, on the coast of the Prydz Bay.

This area is a good place for a station because there is not much snow. It is also close to the ocean, which is important for the science that is done there.

Research

Scientists at Bharati Station do research on:

  • Oceanography: They study the ocean, the water, and the life inside it.
  • Geology: They study the rocks and how the continent of Antarctica was formed. This helps them understand the history of the Indian subcontinent.
  • The weather and the atmosphere.
