Black Ice is a Canadian sports documentary movie. It was first shown at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022.[1] It was directed by Hubert Davis and produced by Vinay Virmani, Drake, LeBron James, and Maverick Carter.[2][3] It is somewhat based on the 2004 novel Black Ice: The Lost History of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, 1895-1925 by Darril Fosty and George Fosty.
The documentary focuses on the life and careers of black players in ice hockey. It shows the racism that players of black endure while playing and highlights the contributions that they have brought to the sport of ice hockey. The documentary also highlights the all-black Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes (CHL) which predates the National Hockey League (NHL).[4]
Reception
The movie received positive reviews from critics. It holds a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[5]
