Brendan Smith (born February 8, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward. He is currently a free agent. He played parts of 14 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, and Dallas Stars.
Career
Before playing in the NHL, Smith played three seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers of the Big Ten Conference (B1G).
He was selected 27th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2007 NHL entry draft. On May 27, 2010, Smith signed a three-year contract to stay with the Red Wings.[1] He was then sent down to their AHL-affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. On November 17, 2011, the Red Wings called Smith up and he made his NHL debut in a 5–2 loss against the San Jose Sharks.[2] On March 2, 2012, Smith scored his first NHL goal against Josh Harding in a 6–0 win against the Minnesota Wild.[3] He helped the Red Wings during the Stanley Cup playoffs but they were eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks four games to three.[4] On July 16, 2013, Smith signed a two-year, $2.525 million contract to remain with the Red Wings.[5] On June 30, 2015, the Red Wings re-signed him to a two-year, $5.5 million contract.[6]
On February 28, 2017, the Red Wings traded Smith to the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2017 third-round pick and a 2018 second-round pick.[7] On June 29, 2017, Smith signed a four-year, $17.4 million contract to stay with the Rangers.[8] On February 8, 2018, Smith was waived by the Rangers and he was sent down to their AHL-affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack.[9]
On July 29, 2021, Smith signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.[10] He played 45 games with them, scoring 4 goals and recording 4 assists.
On July 13, 2022, Smith signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.[11] He played two seasons with the team.
On July 1, 2024, Smith signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Dallas Stars.[12] He played 32 games with the team, scoring 1 goal and recording 5 assists.
