Burundi National Radio and Television[a][3][4] is the national broadcaster of Burundi.[1] It currently operates two radio stations[b] and one television,[5][6][7] which broadcast news, cultural programs, public service announcements, and entertainment shows[c] in four languages like French, English, Kirundi, and Swahili.[1][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]
History and idents
History
Radio Burundi began broadcasting in 1960[16] with the launch of Radio Burundi when the country was still a Belgian colony.[2][17] In 1975, it was launched as Burundi National Radio and Television, long after Burundi's independence. 9 years later, in 1984, television in Burundi was introduced.[2][18][17][19][10]
In June 2013, Burundi National Radio and Television announced a migration from analog to digital television,[2][20][21] which is completed by the end of 2014.[2]A few months later, in May 2015, RTNB failed to complete the migration, and most private-owned radio stations were shut down, following the coup attempt.[9]
Years later, RTNB announced that its old website[d] no longer active.[22] RTNB has had a new general director since the start of August 2016.[23] On 23 April 2017, RTNB lost its employee in traffic accident.[24] In 2017, RTNB finally completed a migration, but by mid 2023, it was still not operational. As of 2024, RTNB broadcasts two television programmes like Ninde and Burundi Bwacu.
Idents
There are two known idents of the station: The first, used from 2008 to 2017,[e] contains a mountain landscape background with a Burundian waving flag displayed the Yandex-font like glassy text RTNB at the center of the screen.[25] The second, introduced after 2017, includes the day's broadcast programs.[26]
