Charles Robert Coyle (born March 2, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey forward. He currently plays for Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL). He also played for the Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins, and Colorado Avalanche.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Coyle played two seasons with the Boston University Terriers of Hockey East and one season with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He was selected 28th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2010 NHL entry draft. He never played a game for the team.

On June 25, 2011, the Sharks traded Coyle along with Devin Setoguchi to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Brent Burns, a 2011 first-round pick and a 2012 second-round pick.[1] On March 1, 2012, Coyle signed a three-year, entry-level contract to join the Wild.[2] After he was signed, the Wild sent him back down to continue playing for the Saint John Sea Dogs. On February 4, 2013, the Wild called Coyle up and he made his NHL debut in a 2–1 loss against the Phoenix Coyotes.[3] On February 23, Coyle scored his first NHL goal against Joey MacDonald in a 2–1 loss against the Calgary Flames.[4] During a game against the Chicago Blackhawks, a puck bounced off a teammates stick and deflected off of Coyle, breaking his leg. He was forced to miss the rest of the 2017–18 NHL season because of the injury.[5]

On February 20, 2019, the Wild traded Coyle to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Ryan Donato and a 2019 fifth-round pick.[6] Coyle helped the Bruins during the playoffs as the managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Final but the team lost to the St. Louis Blues four games to three.[7] On April 6, 2021, Coyle signed a six year, $31.5 million contract to remain with the Bruins.[8] On November 9, 2023, Coyle recorded his first NHL career hat-trick in a 5-2 win over the New York Islanders.[9]

On March 7, 2025, the Bruins traded Coyle along with a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt, Will Zellers and a 2025 second-round pick from the Carolina Hurricanes.[10] He helped the Avalanche make it to the playoffs but they were eliminated in the first round by the Dallas Stars four games to three.[11]

On June 27, 2025, the Avalanche traded Coyle alongside Miles Wood to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Gavin Brindley, a 2026 second round pick and a 2027 third-round pick.[12]
