Chinese famine of 1942–1943
From 1942 to 1943, a major famine happened in Henan, China. It is estimated that between 700,000 and 3,000,000 people died because of lack of food.[1][2] Another 3,000,000 refugees left Henan to look for food. The causes of the famine included drought and locust.[3] [4]
This humanitarian disaster is considered part of World War II history, because of the fact that Henan was surrounded by the Japanese on three sides.[5] A lot of the Chinese soldiers, who fought in the war, came from Henan. As a result, the farmers could not store enough food. [6]
