History
The station was opened on February 6, 1984. It was built by Brazil to support its science program in Antarctica.
The station is named after Luiz Antonio de Carvalho Ferraz. He was an officer in the Brazilian Navy and a scientist. He was an important person in Brazil's Antarctic program.
In 2012, a fire destroyed most of the station, with 70% of it destroyed.[1] Brazil then built a new, modern station in its place. The new station opened on January 15, 2020.
Geography
The station is on an island called King George Island. This island is in the South Shetland Islands. It is in a place called Admiralty Bay.
The station is on a small piece of land that is not covered in ice. This makes it a good place for science and living.
Research
Scientists at the station do research on many things, including:
- The weather and the climate.
- The ocean and the animals that live in it.
- Geology: They study the rocks and the land.
- Microbiology: They study small living things like bacteria.
The new station is very modern and has a lot of new tools for science.
