Daniel Denis Boyle (born July 12, 1976) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played parts of 17 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, San Jose Sharks, and New York Rangers. He also played for Djurgårdens IF of the Elitserien (SEL).
Hodgson is a one-time Stanley Cup champion, winning with the Lightning in 2004, and a two-time second team All-Star, being named one in 2007 and 2008. Internationally, he played for Canada and is a one-time gold medal winner with them, winning at the Winter Olympics in 2002.
Career
Before playing in the NHL, Boyle played four years with the Miami RedHawks of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).
He was not drafted by an NHL team. On March 30, 1998, Boyle signed a contract to join the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL).[1] He was then sent down to play for their AHL-affiliates Kentucky Thoroughblades and Louisville Panthers. On February 18, 1999, the Panthers called Boyle up and he made his NHL debut in a 0–0 overtime tie against the St. Louis Blues.[2] Two days later, on February 20, Boyle recorded his first NHL point, assisting on a Radek Dvořák goal in a 7–1 win against the Phoenix Coyotes.[3] Four days after that, on February 24, Boyle scored his fist NHL goal against John Vanbiesbrouck in a 5–3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers.[4] During his time with the Panthers, Boyle began to grow frustrated with head coach Mike Keenan. Boyle said that Keenan berated players and didn't help grow the young talent on the team.[5]
On January 7, 2002, the Panthers traded Boyle to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2003 fifth-round draft pick.[6] On August 6, Boyle signed a one-year contract to stay with the Lightning.[7] He helped the Lightning during that playoffs, defeating the New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, and Philadelphia Flyers. They defeated the Calgary Flames four games to three in the Finals to win the first Stanley Cup in Lightning history.[8] In 2004, the NHL locked down and Boyle traveled to Sweden to play for Djurgårdens IF of the Elitserien (SEL). He played 32 regular season games, scoring 9 goals and recording 9 assists. He returned to Tampa Bay after the lockout ended. On December 23, 2006, Boyle recorded his first NHL hat-trick against Henrik Lundqvist in a 4–3 win against the New York Rangers.[9] On February 25, 2008, Boyle signed a six-year, $40 million contract to stay with the Lightning.[10]
On July 4, 2008, the Lightning traded Boyle along with Brad Lukowich to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Matt Carle, Ty Wishart, a 2009 first-round draft pick and a 2010 fourth-round draft pick.[11] During game 3 of the 2010 playoffs, Boyle scored an own goal in overtime.[12]
On June 5, 2014, the Sharks traded Boyle's rights to the New York Islanders in exchange for a 2015 fifth-round draft pick.[13] He never played for the Islanders.
On July 1, 2014, Boyle signed a two-year contract to join the New York Rangers.[14]
On October 5, 2016, Boyle announced that he was retiring from playing professional ice hockey.[15]
