David (Daudi) Mwiraria (3 September 1938 – 13 April 2017) was a Kenyan politician. He served as the country's Minister for Environment and Natural Resources and its Finance Minister of Kenya until December 2007.
In 2007, Kenya held its General Elections. Mwiraria ran for re-election, representing the Party of National Unity. He was defeated by Silas Muriuki, who was running on a Mazingira Green Party of Kenya ticket.[1][2]
Career
Mwiraria got his master's degree in statistics from the Makerere University, Uganda 1966 (which was part of the University of East Africa at the time).
The President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki, appointed Mwiraria Minister for Environment on 24 July 2007.
In 2006, Mwiraria was accused of corruption based on audio records that were released on the internet by John Githongo. Githongo was the former Permanent Secretary in the Kenyan Government. The recorded conversations showed that Mwiraria was trying to stop Githongo's inquiries into the theft of over 777 million United States dollars. These thefts occurred in a series of 18 security-related contracts, colloquially called Anglo Leasing.
Death
Mwiraria died of bone cancer and acute respiratory failure on 13 April 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.[3] He was 78 years old.[3]
