The United States of America has maintained diplomatic relations with Mexico since 1822, a few years after that country gained its independence. That year, U.S. President Andrew Jackson sent a special mission as Minister Plenipotentiary to Mexico, and Joel R. Poinsett became the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico.[1]

Consulates

The United States maintains consulates general in Ciudad Juárez, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Matamoros, Mérida, Monterrey, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo and Tijuana[2] and consular agencies in Acapulco, Los Cabos, Cancún, Mazatlán, Oaxaca City, Piedras Negras, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta and San Miguel de Allende.
