On December 8, 2024, the Syrian Arab Republic (1963–2024) under the rule of Bashar al-Assad was overthrown by the Syrian opposition. The Fall of Damascus marked the end of the Assad regime, which had ruled Syria as a dictatorship since the presidency of Hafez al-Assad.[4] As the rebels took over Damascus, Bashar al-Assad and his family fled the capital on a plane to seek asylum in Russia.
