Franciszek Macharski (20 May 1927 – 2 August 2016)[1] was a Polish cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Kraków from 1978 to 2005, succeeding Karol Wojtyła, who became Pope John Paul II.
Early life and education
Franciszek Macharski was born in Kraków, Poland. He was ordained a priest on 2 April 1950 by Cardinal Stefan Sapieha. He completed his theological studies in Kraków at the Jagiellonian University.[1][2]
Ecclesiastical career
In 1978, Macharski was appointed Archbishop of Kraków by Pope John Paul II. He was consecrated on 6 January 1979 by Pope John Paul II himself. Later that year, on 30 June, he was elevated to the rank of cardinal.[1][3]
Retirement and Death
Macharski retired as Archbishop of Kraków in 2005 and was succeeded by Stanisław Dziwisz. He passed away on 2 August 2016 in Kraków and was buried in the Wawel Cathedral.[1][2][3]
