It is 3 kilometers east of Encs, next to the Hernád River, which cuts through the village. Besides the town, it has only two neighbors: Abaújkér to the east and Hernádbűd to the southwest; it is surrounded to the north and south by the edges of Abaújkér.

People lived in the area in the 4th century. Items found near Hernádbűd and Gibárt from this time include iron swords, knives, and spears. The name first appeared in records in 1290 as Gybart. The village's life depended on its closeness to the Hernád River. A dam failure above Gibárt in 1952 had serious effects.
