Governor

A governor is a leader of some kind. In some federations, the governor is the leader of a state or a province of the country.

For example, in the United States, eachof the 50 states has a governor, who is elected by its own people. While the president is the leader of the whole country, a governor is the leader of the people living in or visiting a state. The governor is the executive for the state's administrative processes.

In other countries, a governor is the title of the viceroy. That is the case in Australia, Canada, and other Commonwealth realms, where the governor (or Governor-general) represents the monarch in ceremonies. In many countries such as Pakistan, a provincial governor is appointed by the central government and acts as the ceremonial head of the provinces.

Territories still under British rule have a governor, who represents the monarch in that area.
