Grand Theft Auto V is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is the seventh main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, following 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV, and the fifteenth instalment overall. Set within the fictional state of San Andreas, based on Southern California, the single-player story follows three protagonists—retired bank robber Michael De Santa, street gangster Franklin Clinton, and drug dealer and gunrunner Trevor Philips—and their attempts to commit heists while under pressure from a corrupt government agency and powerful criminals. The open world lets players freely roam San Andreas's open countryside and the fictional city of Los Santos, based on Los Angeles.
Its successor, Grand Theft Auto VI, is planned to be released in 2026.
Plot
The game plays in the fictional city of Los Santos (based on Los Angeles) in the fictional state of San Andreas (based on Southern California). Players can freely explore the open world.
The story is about three protagonists: retired bank robber Michael De Santa, street gangster Franklin Clinton, and drug dealer and gunrunner Trevor Philips. They attempts to commit robberies while under pressure from a corrupt government agency and powerful criminals.
Gameplay
Single player
Grand Theft Auto V has the same basic gameplay from the earlier games in the series. The player can walk, run, swim, climb, jump and use weapons and basic hand-to-hand combat. Players can steal and drive many types of cars, boats, helicopters and motorcycles. Players can explore and choose how they want to play the game. Players can complete missions, but these are not needed to get farther into the game to open content. When the player does a crime and the police see it, they will start to follow the player and try to kill him.
Online multiplayer
Grand Theft Auto Online, the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V, launched on 1 October 2013, two weeks after the main game’s release. Set in the same open world as the single-player mode, it allows up to 30 players (on newer platforms) to explore Los Santos and Blaine County together. Players can create custom characters, purchase properties, run criminal businesses, and participate in a wide range of activities such as cooperative missions, competitive races, and player-versus-player combat. Over time, Rockstar Games has supported the mode with regular content updates, introducing large expansions like Heists (2015), After Hours (2018), and The Contract (2021), each of which added new storylines, vehicles, and gameplay mechanics.
The online mode has become one of the most financially successful products in the industry, generating billions of dollars in revenue through microtransactions known as “Shark Cards.” Its longevity and ongoing support have contributed to the continued popularity of Grand Theft Auto V long after its initial release.
The game also has an online multiplayer mode that is called Grand Theft Auto Online.[4]
