Herbert Kappler (23 September 1907 – 9 February 1978) was a key German Nazi SS functionary Officer and war criminal during the Nazi era. He was a SS soldier from 1931-1935 then promoted to Hauptsturmfuhrer in 1939 recruited by Reinhard Heydrich and Gottlob Berger. In 1943 SS-Gestapo Colonel Kappler became head of German police and security services (Sicherheitspolizei and SD) in Rome serving General Karl Wolff from 1943-1945 during the Second World War and was responsible for the Ardeatine massacre.[1][2]
