Hughenden, Queensland

Hughenden is a small town in the state of Queensland, Australia. It's the main town in the Flinders Shire.[1][2] Hughenden is known as the "dinosaur capital of Australia's north" because of the many dinosaur fossils found in the area.

Geography

Hughenden is located in the north-central part of Queensland, about 386 kilometers (240 miles) west of the city of Townsville. It is on the Flinders Highway. The town is situated on the Flinders River.

History

The town was founded in the 1870s and named after a place in England. It became an important center for the grazing of sheep and cattle. Today, cattle ranching is still a major industry.

Tourism

  • Flinders Discovery Centre: This center has dinosaur fossils and information about the area's history and geology. There's a full-sized skeleton of a Muttaburrasaurus, a type of dinosaur, at the center.
  • Porcupine Gorge National Park: This park is a short drive from Hughenden and is often called "Australia's Little Grand Canyon." It has a deep gorge with unique rock formations and a creek at the bottom.
  • Mount Walker: This is a small mountain near the town with great views of the surrounding area.
