Hypoactive sexual desire disorder
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is a sexual condition. People with this disorder have little or no desire for sexual activity.[1][2] They also have few to no sexual fantasies.[1]
HSDD can affect men or women.[3] Some people with HSDD previously had sexual desire; others never did.[4]
The condition was discovered around the late 1960s or early 1970s. A 2017 study estimated that 10% of adult women have HSDD.[2]
Diagnosis
For some people, this lack of interest in sex is normal, and it does not cause them any distress.[4] These people do not have HSDD.[5] For HSDD to be diagnosed, the lack of sex drive has to cause strong distress or interpersonal troubles.[5]
If low sex drive is mostly due to physical illness, a mental disorder, or drug abuse, it does not qualify as HSDD. Medical causes of HSDD include hormone changes, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism, medication side effects, and certain other health conditions.[6]
