The most famous recording is by Marvin Gaye. It was taken from his eighth studio album In the Groove. It went to number 1 in the United Kingdom and the United States, number 2 in Poland, number 3 in South Africa, number 7 in Ireland and number 8 in Canada.
The song was covered again by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1970 as an eleven-minute song.
