(World Ocean)

The Indian Ocean is the world's third-largest ocean, at 73,400,000 square kilometres (28,300,000 sq mi). It is surrounded by Asia to the north, Australia and the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Southern Ocean to the south, and Africa and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is named for the Indus River on its north shore, which was important in Ancient India ang gave the modern country's name. The Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea are all parts of the ocean.

The deepest point in the Indian Ocean is in the Java Trench, near the Sunda Islands, in the east, at 7,500 metres (24,600 ft). The ocean's average depth is 3,890 metres (12,760 ft). The majority of the ocean is in the southern hemisphere.
