Internal affairs

Internal affairs is a part of a police department or other law enforcement agency. Its job is to investigate police officers and make sure they follow the law and the rules of the department.

Internal affairs looks into things like:

  • Police corruption (officers taking money or favors for illegal reasons)
  • Police brutality (officers using too much force)
  • Misuse of power (officers doing things they are not allowed to do)
  • Breaking department rules

Internal affairs is sometimes called IA. The officers who work there are usually separate from other police units, so they can investigate fairly.

Some people do not trust internal affairs because it is part of the same police department it checks. Others say it is important because it keeps officers honest.,
