Iraqi Airways is the flag carrier of the Iraq. It began in 1944. It's first flight was to Syria in January 1945.[1] It bought its first jet aircraft in the 1960s. They allowed the airline to add flights to cities in the Middle East, Asia and Europe.[2]
During the 1970s, it began its first flight to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.[3] In 1991, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, all of its planes were grounded by the United Nations. A few years later, they allowed the airline to operate a few domestic flights. The airline was allowed to resume international flights 12 years later on May 30, 2003, after the War in Iraq ended.[4] In 2015, the European Union banned the airline from flying there.[5]
