Isaias Afwerki (Tigrinya: Isaias Afwerki (Tigrinya: ኢሳይያስ ኣፍወርቂ; born February 2, 1946) is an Eritrean politician. Isaias became the first (and only) President of Eritrea in 1993.
Political Career
After being elected president of Eritrea, in 1992, Isaias had a referendum on if Eritrea should become independent from Ethiopia and made it a law that everyone had to vote. Witnesses didn’t vote because it’s against their religion so Isaias had them arrested.
In 2010, Isaias said the next elections would be in “three or four decades” or “maybe more.”
