Johann Georg Ziesenis (1716 – 4 March 1776) was a German painter who was born in Denmark-Norway.[1] He was taught by his father and he later painted portraits of famous people like Frederick II of Prussia and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Life
Johann George Ziesenis was born in 1716 in Copenhagen, Denmark,[1] which was a part of Denmark-Norway at that time. He was a pupil (or a student) of his father, Johan Jürgen Ziesenis.[2]
In 1743, Ziesenis became a German citizen and became a court painter to the Elector George II of Hanover, and later his grandson George III,[2] who were also Kings of Great Britain. He also worked in Berlin and Brunswick, and painted one of the first portraits of Charlotte, who married George III.[2] Ziesenis also painted a portrait of Frederick II, the King of Prussia; it was said that this one was the only one that the Prussian King ever sat for,[3] in 1763. It was sold later for €670,000.[3]
