Jonathan P. McKernan is an American lawyer and politician. He was a member of the board of directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) from 2023 to 2025. McKernan is a member of the Republican Party.

Early life

McKernan studied at the University of Tennessee. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in economics there. He later went to Duke University School of Law. He received a Juris Doctor there.[1][2][3]

Career

McKernan began as a banking lawyer and worked for Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale, Dorr LLP and Hogan Lovells US LLP.[4] In 2017, he became an aide to U.S. Senator Bob Corker.[2][3] He later worked at the United States Department of the Treasury.[2]

In October 2019, he was named senior counsel for policy at the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).[2] He later was a counsel to Senator Pat Toomey.[1]

FDIC tenure

In September 2022, McKernan was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve on the board of directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as part of the Republican minority.[5][6] He was sworn in as a member of the board of directors on January 5, 2023.[1] He announced his resignation from the FDIC on February 10, 2025, stating that his term had expired.[7]

Director of the CFPB

On February 11, 2025, President Donald Trump nominated McKernan to be the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).[8]

On May 9, 2025, President Trump withdrew McKernan's name from serving as director of the CFPB and submitted his nomination to serve as the Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance.[9]
