Kasane Teto (Japanese: 重音テト) is an Utau virtual singer software (voicebank). She was originally created on 1 April 2008 as a parody of Hatsune Miku. The voicebank for the character was later made. Since then, Teto has become popular among Vocaloid fans.
History
Kasane Teto started as an April Fools 2008 joke on Japanese internet forum 2chan. The software was a parody of Hatsune Miku, but was later made compatible with the voice synth software UTAU. Voice actress Mayo Oyamano provided voice samples for Teto.[1] The rights holders created the group TwinDrill in 2009 to promote the character. TwinDrill agreed to make Crypton Future Media the future point of contact for commercial use.
Throughout the 2010s, Kasane Teto had more songs released, and a DLC appearance in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F.[2] For the 15th anniversary on 1 April 2023, AH-Software Co. Ltd. announced the Synthesizer V AI version of Teto. This voicebank was later released on 27 April 2023.[3][1]
Character
Kasane Teto is a 31 year old, often seen as female due to her clothes and voice. However the community regard her as a "chimera".
Reception
Despite not being a Vocaloid, Kasane Teto has gained popularity among Vocaloid fans.[4] Music Awards Japan reported in 2025 that five of the ten most popular Vocaloid songs in Japan featured Teto. This number is more than three other songs Hatsune Miku is featured in. Teto is also reported to be the second most used voice behind Miku.[5]
