History

Back in Ancient Greece, Kemer was the city of Idyros. It was member of the Lycian League. After the Ottoman era, Kemer was called Eski Köy (means "Old Village"). From 1916 to 1917, a 23 km (14 mi) long stone wall was built to protect the town from flooding, which used to be a persistent problem. The name Kemer refers to those walls.

Before the Turks totally replaced the Greeks, Greek families lived in the area with the Turks of the area peacefully coexisting. A water mill still exists that used to belong to the Greeks, but the mill is currently located in private property.

Until the 1960s, there was no road connection. The only was to get to Kemer used to be accessible only by boat. Then, a road was built. From the 1980s onwards, this was followed by a great investment in infrastructure. The investment was planned by the state and funded by the World Bank. They did this because they wanted to develop a larger tourism industry.

Economy

The economy of Kemer is mostly based on tourism. Kemer has been declared a first-degree tourism area. There are generally touristic businesses on the coast. Kemer grows orange, lemon and tangerine trees. Recently, pomegranate cultivation has also become widespread.
