La Samaritaine

La Samaritaine is a department store in Paris, on the Seine, just behind the Louvre.[1]

The building was built in 1903 in the Art Nouveau style. The interior is characterized by a rich range of organic forms in stained glass windows, painted staircases and cast iron balconies, and tiled wall panels with floral motifs. On the 11th floor terrace there is a café with magnificent views.[2]

The department store was founded by the Cognacq-Jay family, who have donated large sums of money to humanitarian causes and were also great lovers of art. The art can be seen in the Cognacq-Jay Museum on rue Elzévir. La Samaritaine is now owned by the LVMH company.[3]
