The first case of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in South Korea was detected in May 2015, and the outbreak was declared over by July 2015.[3] The virus, which causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), is a betacoronavirus that was first identified in a patient in Saudi Arabia in April 2012. By the end of the outbreak in South Korea, 186 cases were confirmed, with 38 deaths recorded.[4]

The South Korean outbreak began with the first confirmed case on May 20, 2015.[4] A 68-year-old man who had returned from the Middle East was diagnosed with MERS nine days after he initially sought medical attention.[5]
According to official data from the Central MERS Management Task Force of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, statistical findings were used to report the number of confirmed infections as of May 20, 2015.
