Meekatharra, Western Australia

Meekatharra is a small town in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is located about 770 kilometres (478 miles) north-east of Perth. The town is in a dry, remote area and is known for mining, especially gold, and pastoral farming.

Population

As of the 2021 census, Meekatharra had a population of about 700 people. The town also serves as a service centre for nearby rural areas.

History

Meekatharra is on the traditional land of the Wajarri people, who lived in the area long before European settlement. The town developed in the early 1900s, during a gold rush. Meekatharra was once a busy mining centre with a railway and many businesses. The name Meekatharra is believed to come from an Aboriginal word, but its exact meaning is unknown.

Climate

Meekatharra has a hot desert climate. Summers are very hot and dry, and temperatures often reach over 40°C (104°F). Winters are mild, with cooler nights. Rainfall is low and unpredictable.

Meekatharra's economy is based on:

Meekatharra lies on the Great Northern Highway, which connects it to Perth and towns in the north. It has a sealed airstrip, and small planes fly in and out regularly. The old railway is no longer used.
