Methoxy group
The methoxy group is a functional group in organic chemistry. It consists of a methyl group connected to an oxygen atom, which in turn connects to the rest of the molecule. It has the chemical formula CH3O− or −OCH3. Methoxy is the simplest alkoxy group.
The systematic names of ethers use methoxy groups. One example is dimethyl ether, which has the systematic name methoxymethane. Other important compounds with methoxy groups include methanol and methyl esters.
