Militarism

Militarism or militarist ideology is a view on society. It says society should be like the military. This means that society should follow concepts that can be found in the culture, system and people of the military. Groups or people that support militarism are called militarists.

The most important trait to militarists is discipline. Discipline means to follow a set of rules. It also means doing and completing training that follows these rules. A strong military is good for discipline.

According to militarists, moral goals and the culture of the military can be applied to private business, government, education, and entertainment.

Relationship to militarization

Militarism is related to militarization, and militarist countries often have a strong military. Examples of militarist countries throughout history include Sparta in Ancient Greece, Prussia in the 19th century, and North Korea today. All three of these countries had armies much larger than other countries their size.

In militarist states, the military either run the government, or they greatly influence it. Often the head of state is a military official, though that does not always mean the society is militarised.
