The Musée national d'Art moderne is part of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This part of the centre's activities spans two floors, with a total area of 14,000 m2 and has a collection of approximately 110,000 works, of which only a fraction can be exhibited at any one time.[1]
The museum opened in 1947 in the Palais de Tokyo. It began with donations from artists and private collectors. The collection has grown steadily since then, both through donations and its own acquisitions. It moved to the Centre Pompidou in 1977. Starck, Nouvel and Perrault are responsible for the architecture and design.[2]
The collection is the second largest in the world, after that of the Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition is generally revised every two years. Temporary exhibitions are also presented.[3]
