The National Flag Memorial (Spanish, Monumento Nacional a la Bandera) is a symbolic structure of the city of Rosario, Argentina. It is located in the National Flag Park, on the site where Manuel Belgrano first raised the Argentine flag, on the banks of the Paraná River.[1][2]

It was designed by architects Ángel Guido and Alejandro Bustillo in a stripped-down classicism style, with the collaboration of sculptors Alfredo Bigatti, José Fioravanti and Raúl Antonio Di Giano. In the center is the Argentine national coat of arms and 14 coats of arms of the provinces that made up Argentina in 1812.

Overview

In February 1812, General Manuel Belgrano proposed to the government of the First Triumvirate of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata the creation of the cockade as a national symbol, observing that the national army corps used various insignia. On February 18, 1812, the Triumvirate approved the use of the sky blue and white cockade.

On February 18, 1812, the Triumvirate approved the use of the light blue and white cockade:

"Let the national cockade of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata be white and sky blue..."

— Decree of February 18, 1812, of the power constituted by the Triumvirate

On February 27, 1812, motivated by the recent adoption of the cockade, Manuel Belgrano designed a flag with the same colors and raised it for the first time on the banks of the Paraná River.

Belgrano had orders to monitor the banks of the Paraná River from possible royalist incursions, so he created two combat batteries: "Libertad" (Freedom), located in what is now the city of Rosario, and "Independencia" (Independence), located on Espinillo Island, across the river.
