Newman, Western Australia
Newman is a town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is a mining town and is known for its large iron ore mines. Newman is about 1,186 kilometres (737 miles) north of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia.

Population
As of the 2021 census, about 4,500 people live in Newman. The population can change depending on how many workers are in the mining industry at the time.
History
Before European settlement, the land around Newman was home to the Martu Aboriginal people. The town of Newman was built in the 1960s to support the nearby Mount Whaleback iron ore mine, which is one of the largest open-cut iron ore mines in the world.
The town was named after Aubrey Woodward Newman, a surveyor who died in the area in 1896.
Climate
Newman has a hot desert climate. Summers are very hot, with temperatures often going above 40°C (104°F). Winters are mild and dry. Rain is rare, but when it happens, it is usually during cyclone season.
Economy
The town's economy is mostly based on iron ore mining. The Mount Whaleback mine, run by BHP, is a major employer in the area. Many people in Newman either work at the mine or support the mining industry.

- Opthalmia Dam – A water reservoir near Newman where people go fishing and kayaking.
- Karlamilyi National Park – A large and remote national park east of Newman.

Transport
Newman is connected to Perth by the Great Northern Highway. It has a small airport with regular flights to Perth. Most people drive or fly to reach the town.
