Nickel City Opera
The Nickel City Opea is an American opera company in Buffalo, New York which puts on performances of opera. The Nickel City Opera (often simply called: The NCO) has staged opera productions, commissions and world premieres. It was started in 2004. The NCO collaborated with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The NCO produced standard operatic repertory and contemporary works from the 17th through the 21st century.[1] Michael Ching was the music director of NCO from 2004 to 2017 and its principal conductor from 2012 to 2017.[2] Matthias Manasi was the music director and chief conductor of NCO from 2017 to 2021.[3]
In June 2016 the NCO produced the world premiere of the opera Shot! composed by Persis Vehar about the assassination of President McKinley.[4]
The locations at which NCO staged operas included Shea's Performing Arts Center which is with 3,019 seats one of the big opera houses in the United States.[5] The NCO has also produced operas at the Riviera Theatre,[6] Artpark Amphitheatre and Nicholas Flickinger Performing Arts Center.
