North Regional Library
North Regional Library is a public library in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is part of the Hennepin County Library system. It opened in 1971.
Previous Libraries, 1893–1977
Before North Regional Library, libraries were located in schools. They were closed when North Regional Library opened.
North Regional Library's beginnings
The new library was proposed in 1964.[1] The library opened on October 24, 1971. 25,000 people were invited to the opening. A south library was planned to open after. The south library was never built.
Emerson Room
North Regional Library also has the Emerson Room.[2] The Emerson Room has a collection 500 books donated by J. Harold Kittleson.[1] It was built to look like a New England home.
Remodeling North Regional in 2007
At the time, It was the second largest library in the state.[3] The Minneapolis Central Library was the only larger library. It was not changed for over 35 years. The building was remodeled for the first time in 2007.[4] It added a childrens area, improved lighting, and allowed for more storage.
Renovation in 2020
The library closed for renovation on March 16, 2020. It reopened in 2021. The renovation costed $9 million. Four study rooms, a large meeting room, and an outdoor reading area were added.
