Oscar Fernandes

Oscar Fernandes (27 March 1941 – 13 September 2021) was an Indian politician. He was born in present-day Karnataka, India. He was a member of the Indian National Congress. Fernandes was a member of the Parliament of India between 1980 until 1996 and again from 1998 until his death. He was the Minister of Road Transport and Highways between 2013 and 2014.

Early life and background

Oscar Fernandes was born on 27 March 1941 in Udupi, in the coastal region of present-day Karnataka, India. He belonged to a well-known Christian family. His father, Roque Fernandes, was a school teacher and freedom fighter. His mother, Leonissa Fernandes, was Karnataka's first female magistrate.

Oscar completed his education in Karnataka and was involved in community service from a young age. He was deeply influenced by the teachings of peace and public service.

Personal life

Oscar Fernandes was married and had children. Apart from politics, he had an interest in music, yoga and Indian classical arts. He was known for practicing yoga daily and promoting it for better health.

Death

Fernandes died at a hospital in Mangalore, India from thrombus caused by a fall on 13 September 2021, aged 80.[1] Many political leaders and parties across India paid tribute to him.[2] [3] [4]
