Panjshir (Persian: پنجشیر, meaning "Five Lions", also spelled as Panjsher) is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan. It is known for not being taken by the Soviets during their occupation in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the Taliban also was unable to conquer the area. the Americans left Afghanistan on August 31 2021, allowing the Taliban to take over 2/3 of the Panjshir Valley on September 7th.
